Columbus Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October to honor the Italian explorer credited with “discovering” the Americas, has always been somewhat of a controversial holiday. That’s because while Christopher Columbus stumbled upon what we now call the Caribbean on October 12, 1492, he never set foot on the mainland – even on his subsequent three journeys. Besides, North America had already been “discovered” by the Native Americans, who had been living there for many generations.

- thecliquegirl4년 이상We don't celebrate him at all in my family. We don't like him at all
- venom1313135년 이상We aren't celebrating Columbus because he was a nice guy, we're celebrating him because he sailed to America, and introduced Europe to America, one of the most monumental events in human history! If he hadn't done that, things would not be as they are today. For these reasons (and the one I poster earlier) I think it should continue to be called Columbus Day!
- venom1313135년 이상I don't really think it matters how 'bad' he was because 1. That was how people thought at the time 2. Regardless of his purposes, without his 'discovery' (Because vikings were actually the first people to sail to North America) Europeans would not have come to America until much later (excluding Vikings) 3. Columbus Day was a celebration of the 'discovery' of America by Europe, so why would we change it to a celebration of native people?!
