Columbus Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October to honor the Italian explorer credited with “discovering” the Americas, has always been somewhat of a controversial holiday. That’s because while Christopher Columbus stumbled upon what we now call the Caribbean on October 12, 1492, he never set foot on the mainland – even on his subsequent three journeys. Besides, North America had already been “discovered” by the Native Americans, who had been living there for many generations.

- ooessayforeva6년 이상Let's get this straight, Columbus did not discover America nor was he the first European to discover America. The first people to discover America were Asians who crossed a land bridge during an ice age. And the norse peoples (or vikings) were the first Europeans to discover the Americas, the norse peoples founded Greenland (which is technically part of North America) as well as Newfoundland in Canada. And it should stay Columbus Day because all though he may have killed many, the world would not be the same if he didn't accidentally discover the great land that we now call America today. p.s. sorry for the long comment
