Columbus Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October to honor the Italian explorer credited with “discovering” the Americas, has always been somewhat of a controversial holiday. That’s because while Christopher Columbus stumbled upon what we now call the Caribbean on October 12, 1492, he never set foot on the mainland – even on his subsequent three journeys. Besides, North America had already been “discovered” by the Native Americans, who had been living there for many generations.

personally, ive known that columbus is not a good person, but this changing, it needs to happen. People need to see him for what he is, not someone different. And that is a horrible person.

just name it after the natives is what i find more easier than having to argue about it

When you conquer, you kill. Both sides have great points though.

I have thought, and realized: it is NOT about conquering! It was when Columbus brought TWO worlds together! European history would've been very different! So would've American and South American history! (Especislly Brazil.) Yes, there were rough times, but in the end we all worked things out! Why change a holiday that has been with us for hundreds of years, maybe not as an office, holiday hundreds of years ago, but certainly something to remember about when both worlds saw each other! It was the greatest discovery in all of humanity. We literally saw other people we didn't even know existed. We saw other lands, that we didn't even know existed. (vice versa with Native Americans) So, I say, keep Columbus thriving and strong! #KeepColumbusDay

We'd still be celebrating the fact that America was discovered even if we changed it to Indigenous Peoples' Day.

If he's bringing two worlds together then why did he have to do it in a very subduing and abusive way? Why are we also celebrating that? And we'd still be celebrating the fact that America was discovered if we changed it to Indigenous Peoples' Day. The only real difference is that we'd finally be celebrating the right people.

(@ASmartPerson) And for your information, the Native Americans did NOT cross the ocean nor did the Vikings! The Vikings crossed the Arctic Ocean all the way up to Nothern Europe! The native Americans crossed an ice sheet from Russia to Alaska!

(Not logged into my DogoNews Account.) @ASmartPerson: You only know one side, similar situations could've rised as well within the Native American society. Just because historic school social study textbooks say one side, does not mean we should assume. Don't always assume in history! We will never really know what happened! A few old scrolls tells us nothing!
