Columbus Day, which is celebrated annually on the second Monday of October to honor the Italian explorer credited with “discovering” the Americas, has always been somewhat of a controversial holiday. That’s because while Christopher Columbus stumbled upon what we now call the Caribbean on October 12, 1492, he never set foot on the mainland – even on his subsequent three journeys. Besides, North America had already been “discovered” by the Native Americans, who had been living there for many generations.

- random person6년 이상To whom it may concern, In history class we are talking about columbus day and Indigenous peoples day. In my opinion, columbus is a liar. He does not deserve his own national day. When we celebrate Columbus Day we think that are celebrating a great man, the man who discovered America, right? Wrong. We are celebrating a barbarian. Christopher Columbus was not some innocent, bright-eyed, brave mariner, he was America's first terrorist. The natives who were over 14 were required to hand Columbus a thimble of gold dust every three months. If they did not Columbus would cut their hands off and tie them around their neck until they bled out. More than 10,000 people died handless. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not discover it, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. It was just luck that he discovered the Americas, because he wasn’t even coming here, he got here because his ships went the wrong way.
