Celebrated annually on the second Monday in October, Columbus Day honors Italian explorer Christopher Columbus's discovery of America. However, the federal holiday, which will be observed on October 14, 2019, has long drawn criticism due to the European settlers' brutal treatment of the Native American people. It has also been argued that America had already been "discovered" by the indigenous people when Columbus arrived.

We should keep it the same. We are not celebrating the man, we are celebrating the country. Why try to change history when we can all agree that Columbus was an awful man, but aren't we all? I'm not overlooking what he did, but I'm saying we should look at what he did and celebrate how far we've come as a nation.

I think this was a wise decision because Columbus did enslave many indigenous people when he arrived in their lands.
