Columbus Day celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas (Credit: Dioscoro Puebla / Public domain/Wikipedia.org)

Columbus Day, which is commemorated annually on the second Monday in October, has been a US federal holiday since 1934. However, the celebration, honoring Christopher Columbus's arrival to the Americas, has always been somewhat controversial due to the European settlers' brutal treatment of the Native American people. It has also been argued that the indigenous people had already "discovered" America by the time Columbus landed on the Bahamian island he named San Salvador on October 12, 1492.

The natives' day should be celebrated as if they were the ones who really discovered America, they should even be given credit for being the ones who discovered America.

What I think is everyone should celebrate what they think it should be called. I do agree with many people about it being called 'indigenous peoples day' because Native Americans really discovered America Columbus was on a mission to gather gold.

I find it very uncool that Columbus did anything like that. He was looking for a totally different country and got lost, and then decided "Oh, people that have a slightly different color skin and speak a different language, let's sell them as slaves" not cool. I'd say Indigenous Peoples Day, but maybe both for the people that are on the Columbus side or do something like "Indigenous Peoples Day (formerly Columbus Day)" on calendars.

Well actually, the Vikings did, but the natives made it their home fair and square.

Columbus was a horrible person so his "holiday" should be replaced by indiginous people's day

I think it should be Indigenous peoples because he has killed the indigenous people so he Chistopher Columbus dose not deserve this holiday the indigenuse people do.
