Columbus Day has been a controversial holiday since it was established (Credit: Democracyandme.org/CC-BY-SA-2.0)

Columbus Day, which honors the Italian explorer's October 12, 1492, arrival to the Americas, has been a US federal holiday since 1971. However, the holiday, marked annually on the second Monday of October (October 10th this year), has always been controversial. Many believe that the European settlers' mistreatment of the Native American people is not a cause for celebration.

    me personally i would not celebrate columbus day bc he is a slave trader.

      My option is that that should be "Indigenous Peoples` Day" instead of "Columbus Day"!

        I mean this makes since. I mean ye Columbus wasn't the frst person to step foot on América. There where already like a million people. And I hate how we takes the credit. So I 100% understand this. ANYWHO HAVE A GREAT DAY Y'ALL BAI!

          I can argue with that. But instead of calling it something else, it should probably be an Italian holiday because it was a big feat for them

            I think it should be indigenous peoples day and we should learn about indigenous people not Columbus. (plus Columbus does not deserve all the attention he gets)
