Bacteria can be found almost everywhere on Earth, from the bottom of the ocean to the inside of our intestines. However, the single-celled organisms typically measure a few micrometers and can only be seen through a microscope. Now, researchers have identified a thin, thread-like bacteria species that grows up to 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) long. Named Thiomargarita magnifica, it is the largest bacteria found to date.

Wowza! That is soo interesting! What I find pretty hard to believe is that an eyelash sized bacterium is the largest of its kind! If I ever found another human as tall as Mount Everest, I would flip out, in a good way! I was looking at the chart of other bacteria on a ruler, and all the others are crazy small! And if the bacteria was found in mangroves, it's probably important for their survival! After reading this, I will never think of eyelashes the same again! Did you know that bacteria is older than dirt? Yup! They have been around for 3.5 billion years! Speaking of dirt, did you know there are over 40 million bacteria in a gram of soil? That's a whole lot to think about! I found this article really interesting because scientists actually discovered a new species! It's not everyday (or is it?) you find a new bacteria with 5 million trillion trillion (5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) in the world! Now that's a whooooooole lot of bacteria!!
