On September 26, 2022, NASA's golf cart-sized DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft intentionally crashed into a distant asteroid. The spectacular collision, observed by telescopes worldwide, was NASA's first practical attempt to alter the path of an asteroid. The $325 million mission was part of the space agency's overall planetary defense strategy to protect Earth from the impact of an errant space rock.

- kumquatperson3년 이하Why not just build a rocket to send into space with laser type thing and just blast them mid air..
- nasajayhopsikn3년 이하Because this isn't star wars kumquat. A laser mounted to a 747 could barley shoot down a 5x5x5 foot ICBM warhead so what makes you think we can "blast" a 5 mile asteroid. The DART program is the single best way to DEFLECT, an asteroid, because there is no efficient way to destroy one.
- begole3년 이하ok just to clarify to everyone so they stop being difficult, the astroid never would have hit earth or done anything it would have just went past and nothing would happen. {Ok?} and why they hit the astroid is becuse they wanted to see if it was possibel to hit one and send it off corse becuse if an astroid was going to hit earth in like 2000 years then we would have the tecnolighy
- howww3년 이하that is a lot of money
