The Nepenthes pudica develops underground traps to catch prey ((Credit: Martin Dančák)

The carnivorous pitcher plants obtain nutrition by luring unsuspecting insects inside their unique jug-shaped leaves and devouring them. However, the brightly-colored "pitfall traps" are usually set above the ground. Now, researchers have found a new species that grows its prey-trapping contraptions underground to capture subterranean bugs like ants, mites, and beetles.

plants that trap their prey on the surface like with certain sticky stuff and aromas! I never knew that was a thing! This is really very interesting but terrifying too, all at the same time! And that this is the first discovered of its kind! WOW! Apparently there are up to 700 different species of carnivorous plants all around the world! How fascinating! #carnivorous plants #scary #interesting #new discovery

Omg wow! That is so interesting! I've heard of plants that trap their prey on the surface like with certain sticky stuff and aromas, but this is AMAZING! But pretty scary as well! And it's the first discovered of it's kind! Pretty cool if you ask me! Did you know that there are over 700 species of carnivorous plants around the world? A little too much to think about if you ask me! Did you also know that there are carnivorous plants underwater and in the desert! Contrary to popular belief though, carnivorous plants like the fly trap or pitcher plants mentioned in this article can't harm humans! So you're okay if you come across one of these haha! Anyways, this was a really fascinating find! Good job to Dančák and his team!!
